Tips on cleaning blood spills on different surfaces

0

Blood is one of the fluid substances that are tricky to clean. It easily seeps through porous materials and binds to anything that it meets, may it be fabrics or surfaces. Again, in addition to all that, you may also need to worry about the things you cannot really see. Blood can carry dangerous pathogens and therefore you must be clear on how to approach the cleanup.

While on a non- carpeted floor

Blood spills are common in non-carpeted surfaces, hard surfaces. These include; cemented, wooden, metallic, ceramic and tiled floors. It can also be absorbed in non-absorbent flooring. Blood spills and other bodily fluids in such surface are easy to clean compared with other absorbent surfaces.

However, to avoid contamination and spread of the damage, the cleaning must be done with a lot of care. In case of such spills, the following should be done; the area should be blocked off until cleanup and disinfection is done. Visitors and unprotected members of staff should not be allowed at the scene until the area is rendered safe.

The cleaners also must ensure they are in the right gear while cleaning and disinfecting the place to avoid infections. All non-disposable materials like the brush, towels, mops and such should be disinfected and let to dry in dry air. After the cleaning, one should wash their hands with soap thoroughly to keep off any germs.

Blood spills on a carpeted area

The absorbent nature of a carpeted floor makes it difficult to clean. Most buildings are carpeted and that’s why it’s important to get to know how to clean up blood spills on such surfaces. There is no way to completely disinfect carpets due to their absorptive nature of the carpet and therefore the biohazard cleanup company must devise an ingenious way that would ensure proper sanitization is done.

With blood spills, you need to work fast; once blood spills on the carpet, it easily turns hard and thus can be difficult to clean. That is why one must respond as fast as possible, following the right precautionary measures before it lingers. Again, you need to use the right cleaning products. Bleaches and other strong decontaminants can damage the carpet. Manufacturer’s approved shampoos and cleaners should be used to decontaminate the surfaces.

Steam cleaning is also recommended depending on the size and the nature of the spill. A steam cleaner can do a thorough job in cleaning, sanitizing, and removing debris from the carpet compared to conventional washing.  Although it is a bit more expensive, steam cleaning is the most effective in preventing blood borne pathogens.

Blood spill of furniture

The material of the furniture would tell the method of cleaning to be used in cleaning up blood spills. For instance; for an upholster furniture, you’ll need to treat the affected places like you’d do for a carpet. You have to allow the disinfectant to sit for a few minutes on the carpet before wiping everything off. If the furniture is covered by a piece of fabric, remove the cloth and give it a warm wash using the right detergent. Look out for other blood spots on the furniture and clean thoroughly.

Among the bodily fluids, blood is the trickiest to clean. Therefore, depending on the surface, cleaning must be done appropriately to ensure that the surface is clean and pathogen free.
