With its repetitive beats and synthesized backtrack, EDM or Electronic Dance Music was originally intended for dance in clubs but it has today evolved to be played on almost any occasions and every place. As these electronic beats are explored and experimented freely by the DJs, several genres and subgenres of its keep mushrooming every day. Techno

Identified by its basic beat-line, this genre has its roots in Detroit in the U.S and started during the late 1980s. The music actually initiated from the House music but got a different face because of its slightly darker tone and faster beats per minute. Its recognizing feature is its repetitive beats with slow gradual changes. You can often hear industrial and gritty sounds in it which reminds you of the industrial revolution, the era of its creation. Gesaffelstein & REZZ are renowned as experimental techno.

House

Arguably the most popular genres of EDM music; it is instantly recognizable by its iconic four beats per minute classic sound that is backed with beautiful vocals and sweet melody. The popularity of this genre lies in its ability to ooze the good vibe and encompass every people around in it. The music started in the 1980s in Chicago. Its soulful funk resonates well with the swaying bass beat.

It has several subgenres. Few most popular subgenres are Progressive House, Deep House, Tech House, Electro House etc. Few of its notable artists are Zedd&Eric Prydz, Franklin’s knuckles, lane 8 & Jamie Jones etc.

Dubstep

This genre too started in the late 1980s but in London. The genre almost has a cult following. A perfect genre for bass heads; it is characterized by marked aggressive pace and tense build-ups along with huge dynamic drops. With its wub-wub sounds that comes across as scattered and screeching sounds; it is vastly different from most music and meant for real hard-core bass fanatics. As the music originated due to the evolution of other genres like the techno, dub, broken heart, drum, base etc.; its real development happened around 2005.

Trap, love step, trip hop, bro-step, dub-poetry etc. are some of its popular subgenres. Its most famous DJ’s names include Skrillex, Bassnectar, Zomboy, Flux Pavilion, etc.

Drum and Bass

As evident from the name, it is identified by drum beats and the bass line carrying the tune. Its music is perhaps one of the most intense and misunderstood EDM sounds. Evolving in the early 1990s, the music has its roots in the hardcore rave scene of London mutating a darker and more sinister sound. However, the sound has evolved during the years and the genre sounds becoming more defined than the dubstep. Its music draws elements from hip-hop, jazz and even other EDM styles to put you in a trance.

Dark-step, hard-step, liquid Funk, drum step, sambass etc. are some of its most popular subgenres. Its renowned DJs are Goldie, Roni, Bad Company, Dillinja, etc.
