NYC Energy Code

New York Energy Conservation Code became effective in 1976 commonly known as NYC Energy Code. This code regulates and concerns the policy, conservation, taxation, and utilities of energy. the code is divided into different articles constituting the consumption of energy. It is specified that before designing and constructing a building or even before doing any modification in the building, the energy consumption must be accounted. The latest version of the NYC Energy Code was published in 2016.

The residential section of the code mentions the general conditions that should be followed for energy modeling or design procedure i.e. the interior temperature for heating load calculation is 72 degrees F and minimum temperature for cool loading calculation is 75 degrees F.

The code also set some requirements for specific systems, materials, and equipment which must be properly labeled for compliance assessment. Different building requirements were established in the NYC Energy Code for energy efficiency also including criteria for insulation, air leakage, fenestration, boilers, heat pumps, ventilation and piping, electricity and lighting among other requirements. The code compliance is assessed through an Energy Rating Index(ERI) Analysis.

It is mandatory for all the buildings to meet the requirements specified in the code. There are some sections that explain the requirements carried out in already existing buildings and is broken down into five sections including general requirements, additional requirements,  alterations, repairs,  change of occupancy or use. There is also an exception in this code for Historic Buildings and is mentioned explicitly in the consequent section.

The NewYork Engineers has its own regulatory methods to follow the criteria given for the energy saving. Following the code is a complex task at first but once it is established it is very helpful to save energy for future and has a long-term benefit reducing the building ownership costs.
