What do the Statistics say about the dangers?

This article examines 7 studies that have examined injuries related to kitesurfing and biomechanical demands on the body. Each of these studies can be accessed at the end of this article.

Kitesurfing Injuries per 1000 Hours0.6%

It was discovered that injuries happen on average 5-7 times per 1000 hours non-competitive activities. Wegner & Wegener’s 2012 study found that approximately 12 injuries occur per 1000 hours.

Notable is the fact that 2016 was the most recent year in which we gathered data. Most of the studies used in this article date back to 2010. This could be explained by the fact that fewer systematic studies are now being conducted due to safety improvements. However, it’s possible that more people are involved in the sport and cause higher injuries.

Lundgren and colleagues performed the largest study (206 participants). Lundgren et al. found that the most commonly injured areas were the knee (24%), ankle (17%) and trunk (16%). The shoulders (10%) were also common. This particular study recorded 5 serious and 1 catastrophic incidents.

Surprisingly, injuries were significantly different between advanced tricks-trained and non-trained riders. This correlation was also directly related to years of experience in kitesurfing. People with less than three years of experience were more likely to sustain injuries.

All studies showed that injuries caused by tricks or jumps were the leading cause of injury.
