It’s fun

Whether you have a little one playing tag rugby or an older child enjoying a contact version of the sport, rugby is fun. This has a lot to do with the fact that it differs from most other team sports by giving all players the same chance to defend, pass and run.

Everyone gets to really participate, and it is rare for one player to dominate the game, something that can be a problem in other team games. More information about the rules of rugby can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/rules_and_equipment/4200680.stm.

Coaching

There are some great coaches and many helpful tools, such as videos of rugby training drills and books and tutorials available. There are so many passionate players and ex-players out there who are eager to share their knowledge that it is relatively easy to find good coaching opportunities for your youngsters.

Safety

Safety can sometimes be a concern when rugby is mentioned, but it is actually a very safe sport in many ways, especially when you consider the time that can be spent playing non-contact versions and following Rugby Training drill Videos, for example.

Even the mainstream, contact version of the sport has many safety features, not least the fact that it is played on turf or grass, ensuring that there is no falling on hard floors or boards. In addition, game rules place a high emphasis on teaching safe contact and tackling. There is not the same focus on using the head as a tool as there is in football, for example.

Character

Playing rugby can be character-building and serve as a good tool for building fitness and stamina. This is emphasised by the fact that players refer to the referee as “sir”, something that is a stark contrast to the many unpleasant names that can be heard at a football game.

There are also many social and emotional benefits of being involved in a team-focussed sport where the emphasis is on working as a group rather than seeking out individual glory.
