BHO Extraction: A Brief User’s Guide

0

BHO Extraction, or butane honey oil/butane hash oil extraction, is one of the most commonly used hydrocarbon extraction mechanisms today.

The process occurs inside a sealed cylinder. BHO extraction is widely used today to create several edibles, juices for vaping, and topical treatments.

Usually, this process uses butane, a hydrocarbon gas. BHO extraction became popular in the 1970s. It is very important to note that butane is highly flammable, and therefore, you cannot perform BHO extraction unless you are an expert and authorized to do so.

Since the 1970s, hydrocarbon extraction and other extractions have become much easier, more advanced, and more efficient due to the BHO extraction.

Open-Loop BHO Extraction Vs. Closed-Loop BHO Extraction

Since BHO extractions commonly occur in closed-loop atmospheres, you need to understand the difference between closed-loop and open-loop extraction in order to understand BHO extractions.

Although you can perform BHO extractions in an open-loop way, it can be extremely dangerous and is thereby not recommended by all BHO extraction experts.

In open-loop extractions, the extraction occurs in an open glass tube or metal tube. Butane is released into that space. Since the spaces are not tightly closed, very small leaks can lead to huge explosions due to the highly flammable nature of butane.

Closed-loop BHO extractions aim at making the extraction processes safer. They make the atmosphere very tightly closed in order to remove the possibility of butane leaks.

That’s why all professional extraction facilities are legally required to use closed-loop BHO extractions because they are safe. Even then, the facilities have to get approval from their local authorities.

Apart from safety, closed-loop BHO extraction also allows for the recycling of the used butane. Since it is a much safer, controlled, and more effective process, this is the BHO extraction method you should always go for.

Best Solvent for BHO Extraction

Although the name of BHO extraction suggests the use of butane, you can also use other hydrocarbon gases like propane. The most important factor in BHO extractions is the purity of the solvents used.

That’s why butane is a much better option for BHO extractions. When you are choosing bho butane, it is better to go for N-Butane because it has a boiling point of 30.5 F, can be easily re-condensed, and yields a more stable extract.

Butane is very clean, odorless, and colorless. However, given that it is odorless and colorless, it can be very hard to notice a leak. That’s why you should be very careful and always use closed-loop BHO extraction.

Conclusion

BHO extraction is among the most widely used hydrocarbon extraction techniques. It is a very easy process; however, it is also very dangerous due to the highly inflammable nature of butane. Always go for closed-loop BHO extraction in order to minimize the risks of explosions.
