What is Vocabulary? 

Vocabulary is a collection of words within a language. Vocabulary is all about words. A particular group of words that you are trying to teach is called vocabulary. Every person’s vocabulary is unique. 

Why is Vocabulary so Important?

Children can not express their own ideas without having sufficient vocabulary. They do not even understand other people’s expressions either. Vocabulary is connected to both writing and reading skills. It is the foundation for developing all other skills like listening comprehension, writing comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking, spelling and pronunciation. Children will always need to operate with words like three-letter and four letter words to gain vocabulary and remember them. Words are easy to learn only if the child is active enough in drawing the picture of a comment, writing their definition of it and thinking of an example sentence to use in it. The teacher plays a vital role in assisting children in developing their vocabulary. Vocabulary is built up throughout childhood. The teachers usually have the necessary time to insist on teaching and practising vocabulary.  The English syllabus itself is organised around vocabulary and grammar structures.

Parents should speak to kids all the time and give them consistent word models. They must use different words to expand vocabulary skills in children. They must provide an explanation of past and present events using more sophisticated language and the best examples. It helps children to understand new words. Reading is the best activity to develop vocabulary skills in kids.

  • Use theme-related magnets or sticker boards to create stories 
  • Teach them through concepts like body parts
  • Talk to them during mealtime, playing and bedtime.

Vocabulary is the most crucial skill when learning a foreign language. Based on vocabulary, children will develop other skills like reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
